The 4th graders are lucky enough to participate in CharcterWorks this year! Beaven Walters is the creator and instructor of the program. This year the lessons will focus on social skills, including facial expressions, body language and choice of words. The play is called, Social Skills: How to Interact with Human Beings.
Beaven took the kids through a lesson in which she pretended not to know how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and they had to give her verbal directions. It turned out to be quite hilarious as the kids learned to give much more specific directions in order to get her to make the sandwich.
Students participated in an activity where partners were given matching legos. One partner built a structure and had to give directions to their partner to build the same. The catch though, was that they couldn't look past the divider. This activity proved just how specific and elaborate our communication needs to be in order to be understood.
Another lesson consisted on understanding how body language can affect your communication. The photos represent students responding to different feelings and showing it.
Each student met with a group and played a game of charades while classmates had to guess the feeling.
Students create posters based off a simple saying focused on how to respond to people. THINK - Comments should be Thoughtful, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary and Kind
Students are making progress on the musical by memorizing their lines and positions.
