Each student has a calendar in which to help them plan ahead to ensure that the task is complete on time. We discussed how important it is to not save all the work until the last weekStudents will be organizing and recording their responses in their Reader's notebook. The book, packet and notebook should be brought back to school each Monday to be used during circles. Please help your students stay on track and be prepared!
I recognize that it is difficult to keep up with the new homework plan each week but I appreciate your support and patience! This reading plan will stick for the remainder of the year! If you want to implement math then it would be great to see students continue with Khan Academy.
Our class is beginning historical fiction literature circle groups. For this unit, students will be reading books from various time periods that include difficult times in history. Some of the books are intense (emotionally), especially when students can grasp different perspectives of characters. On Mondays the circles will be discussing parts of the book in more detail and thinking critically about the time period in which the book takes place. Note: I have not sent books home with students or had such high expectations for circles before! If you feel that this homework expectation will not work for your student please encourage them to advocate for themselves. I am more than willing to make a new plan, cut down on work, change expectations, etc. depending on the needs of your student! Please also take a look at the content of the book to ensure that it is a good fit for your student.
